GALM Series February Event in Detroit a Success

February’s Third Lightweight Vehicle Manufacturing 2016 GALM Series conference in Detroit was a successful event that continued to present relevant information, as well as opportunities for companies to develop relationships and advance the industry.

This conference centered on reducing the cost of multi-material joining and forming, and maximizing quality assurance. Case study and analytic presentations included a comprehensive joining analysis, quality assurance at all stages, mass production of composites, as well as a paint and finish evaluation.

One attendee offered this summation of his experience:

The broad topic of the conference centered on best practices and strategies for incorporating lightweight materials into the vehicle Body-in-White (BIW). From the discussions I had, and the presentations made, magnesium die-castings are viewed as a great opportunity for weight reduction and engineers want to use them in the BIW. However, engineers still believe they require better solutions still to be developed for coating, joining, and prevention of galvanic corrosion in order to utilize them in the BIW. Additional research should be done on coating, joining, and prevention of galvanic corrosion so that magnesium castings can grow tremendously by inclusion in the BIW.”

IMA has more opportunity to grow through participation in similar events and conferences. This will allow for a far-reaching, consistent IMA message of magnesium industry promotion and growth. Weight reduction and the use of magnesium will continue to be a main topic of discussion and IMA will continue to assist in providing a platform for the exchange of information and ideas through events like this one.

Todd Olson is Chief Financial Officer for Twin City Die Castings Company. Mr. Olson has been an IMA member since 2000 and has been a part of Twin City Die Castings since 2004. The company has been in operation for 97 years and focuses on magnesium and aluminum die castings as well as precision machining. IMA had the chance to interview Mr. Olson and here’s what he had to say:

Q: Tells us briefly about your company.

A: Twin City Die Castings is a full-service provider of precision Magnesium and Aluminum die castings. For nearly a century, TCDC has been dedicated to creating custom die casting solutions for the Automotive, Recreational, Industrial Equipment, Defense, Aerospace, Computer, HVAC, and Medical Industries.

TCDC was founded in 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A leader in die casting technology and machining, TCDC maintains 184,000 sq. feet of space and approximately 25 high pressure die cast machines ranging in size from 350 to 1000 tons and is TS 16949 certified. Continually engaging in emerging technology and die casting automation allows us to reduce overall product costs, and provide consistently high quality parts. The methods we've developed provide incredible customer benefits, and have also been instrumental in allowing us to win multiple international Awards for die casting excellence.

Q: What do you see as the greatest opportunities for growth in the Magnesium Industry?

A: Light-weighting in the automotive industry. This has the potential to be a game changer for magnesium.

Q: The greatest challenges?

A: Educating decision-makers about the advantages of Magnesium. Since magnesium is a much lighter weight option compared to aluminum and steel, while still providing great mechanical properties, there are very few reasons not to have it as th/e material of choice in a wide variety of applications.

Q: How does the membership in the International Magnesium Association assist you in meeting these challenges and exploiting these opportunities?

A: The IMA offers many educational resources about the advantages of magnesium. The IMA leverages its advantages as an association to provide promotional and educational outreach that Twin City Die Castings could not provide on its own.

Q: Everyone has a ‘Magnesium Story’ – an ‘Ah Ha!’ moment in their careers. What was yours?

A: The first time I picked up an identical part that was cast in aluminum and one that was cast in magnesium. The advantages were immediately apparent – we were able to provide tremendous weight savings, while maintaining the properties and functions needed in the part.

Q: Looking forward – where is the magnesium industry in 5 years? 10 years?

A: Tremendous growth is on the horizon utilizing this mag-nificent material. Within the next decade, I expect magnesium use to double from its current level.

Q: What do you look forward to about the 2016 73rd World Conference, May 15-17, 2016 in Rome, Italy?

A: The conference is being held a great new venue, with state of the art audio/video capabilities. This year’s line-up of presenters is outstanding. The World Conference is the place to be for networking with the leaders and innovators in the magnesium industry.

National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys sets up innovation center with some institutes in Qingghai

On December 16, 2015, Prof. Panfusheng, director of National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, with his research team, visited the integration project of Qinghai Saline Lake industry. Both sides signed a strategic cooperation agreement, by which National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys will join Chongqing Institute of Science and Technology, University of Utah, and University of Queensland together to create collaborative innovation platform for Qinghai salt lake industry.

In order to speed up the implementation of the relevant agreement, Mr. Wang Xingfu, president of Qinghai Saline Lake industry, with Mr. Hou Jun, president of Qinghai Saline Lake Magnesium, visited National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, Chongqing Boao Magnesium & Aluminum, and Chongqing Shengmei Magnesium. During the visit, Mr. Wang Xingfu conducted in-depth communication with Prof. Panfusheng. Both sides determined the focus of cooperation and specific route implementation for technical consultation, forward-looking technology R & D, and future strategic cooperation.

Qinghai Salt Lake Industry is constructed with the base of Chaerhan salt lake. The lake, with an area of 5856 square kilometers, is the largest soluble potassium-magnesium salt deposit in China. It contains rich potassium, sodium, magnesium, boron, lithium, bromine and other mineral resources, with total reserves of about 60 bln. tons. Qinghai Salt Lake Industry plans to target the 400kt/a of primary magnesium, and rank top 2 worldwide for the production of primary magnesium.

The implementation of cooperation by both sides will further promote the further cooperation between the two sides, accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and lay the foundation for the healthful development of magnesium industry in Qinghai salt lake.
