Magnesium must be processed in a variety of ways throughout its lifecycle. The different processes are explained throughout this site in detail. Since magnesium is not commonly found in its pure form, processing begins soon after being removed from the seawater or earth’s crust. Ways in which the metal is extracted and purified are described on the 'Magnesium Basics, Where to Find Magnesium?' page.

In most structural applications, magnesium is alloyed with other metals to improve properties or provide other desired characteristics. The elements added to the pure metal are dependent on the qualities of the finished alloy that are needed. Within the Designing with Magnesium tab, information on these different alloys can be found. Once alloyed, the metal must be processed further creating useable parts. Castings and wrought products can be created from alloy ingots and are also discussed in the Designing tab.

Following the formation of magnesium parts, oftentimes protective coatings must be applied to prevent corrosion and improve the aesthetic appearance of the product. Different types of coatings and applications can be reviewed in the Designing tab as well.

Throughout the casting and forming processes, magnesium scrap is produced. This along with end of life magnesium parts can be recycled in a number of ways. Within the Magnesium Sustainability tab, these different recycling processes are explored.

Magnesium producers and users are constantly expanding the ways in which magnesium can be better processed for their needs as well as working on different recycling techniques.
